As like me, most of the Marathi Persons, particularly who live in or nearby Pune or Mumbai are definitely aware about the incredible beauty of Konkan.
In Hindu mythology, Konkan is called as ‘Yakshbhoomi’, i.e. the place where ‘Yakshas’ live. (Yakshas are the artists of Gods and Goddesses). Just like the art of Yakshas, which is incredible, incomprehensible, but divine; Konkan is also like that. The beauty of Konkan cannot be described, but one has to feel it. It can be only felt.
And also, being a hilly terrain and sea nearby, you will find the scenic locations nearly in every village of Konkan. But this is not the only reason for having the farm home in Konkan. Though you are always filled with the emotional pleasure when you are in Konkan, still there are many other materialistic reasons also. Let us try to find out the few.
First, as Konkan is still underdeveloped, or at least some parts of Konkan are like this, the Land cost is less compared to other areas. I agree that the hilly terrain of Konkan needs more expenses for development, still it is less costly to owe farm land in Konkan. So from economic point of view, to owe a farm land in Konkan is still affordable.
Next and very important factor is the fertility of land. If you had observed in your trips of Konkan, you will always see that most of the land is always covered with green. This green might be of huge trees, of bushes or even of a grass, but most of land and most of the time it is covered with green. This indicates that the fertility of land is very good. Also as unfortunately, the most of the land is not cultivated the green cover is because of the wild trees or bushes. In such a case, as such land is not touched by chemical fertilizers, and poisonous insecticides, or pesticides, is very ideal for plantation.
And most important fact is the species for which Konkan is famous. Everybody knows that Konkan is famous for Alphanso Mangoes, Vengurla Cashews and Shreevardhani Areca seeds (Supari). Also, with the words of thanks, to Dapoli Krishi Vidyapeeth, I would like to mention here that the spices like Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Pepper can be easily and profitably grown in Konkan. In fact, DApli Krishi Vidyapeeth had developed special varieties of spices for Konkan, which gives very good yield in the land and atmosphere of Konkan. Thus, spices, mangoes, cashew and areca seeds, these all are cash crops and fetches unbelievable price. Thus the horticultural plantation of these varitites, which gives best yield only in Konkan, will definitely prove your investment for this purpose, economically viable.
This is all about emotional and economic concerns. Now speaking with social concern, as we all know that, most of the villagers from Konkan area either have migrated or migrating to metro cities like Mumbai and Pune. You must have also observed that, though they live in metro cities, they are still attached emotionally with their villages, and are eager to visit their native villages, always. The only reason for the migration of these villagers is they are not getting any opportunity for earning their livelihood at their natives. Now as our farm home will have 80% area to be utilized for horticultural plantation, it will definitely need a person to take care of this plantation on daily basis. This need of ours will generate the opportunities for them to earn their livelihood at their native places. This will not only make them happy but will also solve the problem of over burdening of cities, which happens due to such migration. There might be few additional reasons, but these are the most important reasons which makes Konkan ideal for owing a farm home or farm land.
